Maik Mühlberg driving digitalization forward
At thyssenkrupp Marine Systems we aim to become the most modern naval company in Europe. Being an attractive employer is part of this mission. After all, only as a team and with the help of our 6,500 employees can we get closer to our goal every day. Maik Mühlberg, Head of Production Digital & Automation at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, is part of this crew. In his day-to-day work, he drives digitalization and innovation at our shipyard in Kiel.
Maik Mühlberg joined thyssenkrupp Marine Systems one and a half years ago. As Head of Production Digital & Automation, he now drives the digitalization of our production. "The variety of tasks on different topics and specialist areas is what makes my job so exciting", says Maik. "But it can also be a challenge due to the complexity of our projects". Maik Mühlberg particularly likes it when all individual steps are brought together at the end of a project to achieve a common goal.
„I have always been fond of new technologies and digitalization.”, Maik tells us. As a university student he started developing IT solutions for production processes. Later in his career he found that topics revolving around Industry 4.0 were his strong suit and what he wanted to focus on in his career. “When I was presented with the opportunity to work at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, the products were what sparked my interest in particular. It is a rather unique experience working on building a submarine “, says the specialist for digital and automated production.
Paperless QA – saving time with digitalization
Today, as Head of Production Digital & Automation, Maik Mühlberg deals with a variety of topics – ranging from paperless production and the connection and simulation of machinery to working with digital twins of plants and productions processes. „One of the projects I work on is Paperless QA”, Maik explains. “In the future, it will be possible to document all inspections during production digitally, mobile and directly in the system."
The QA inspectors can use the tablet to enter their inspection results directly on site and also sign them digitally. This not only saves a lot of paper, but also the tedious process of printing out, filling in and re-scanning the previous documents - in other words, a lot of time. “Since we need, among other things, a WLAN infrastructure in the production areas, sufficient suitable tablets and a completely new process in our IT systems, this is a complex and exciting topic, which is also a lot of fun”, says the expert happily.
The importance of corporate culture
At thyssenkrupp Marine Systems, Maik Mühlberg especially appreciates the open way of communicating with each other and the sense of team spirit: „I have a really great team but also beyond teams and departments: There is a great sense of team spirit. Together we really get things moving here. And that is what makes working at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems a good experience. “
Tips for young professionals
What young professionals should bring to the table if they want to work in a similar field at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems or in Maik’s team? “Of course, a good education and expertise are an advantage. But what really makes a difference are the work ethic and team spirit.”, explains the Head of Production Digital and Automation. “Curiosity and an interest in learning new skills are crucial.” His best tip for young professionals: “Stay curious and broaden your horizon. You can always specialize later in your career.”
Maik Mühlberg and his team drive digitalization and innovation at thyssenkrupp Marine Systems forward – and bring us closer to our goal of becoming the most modern naval company in Europe every day.
