The merger of six different shipbuilding companies – specilized in naval shipbuilding – located in three different European countries under the roof of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems has brought together shipyards, most in operation for more than 100 years. One of them – Kockums in Karlskrona, Sweden – exists for more than 300 years. Together, these six shipyards have delivered more than 3000 merchant and naval ships and, for the past 45 years, more than 160 submarines.
German and Swedish submarine design and construction has been following a constant evolution, reflecting progress in technology and operational requirements of the client navies. More than 15 different designs, some of then in serveral versions and equipped with tailer-made systems have been built / designed
The history of the shipyards is ruled by the design and construction of famous ships and submarines of which some have become milestones in the international development of naval shipbuilding. All together more than 1000 naval vessels have been built within three centuries.
