The GOTLAND Class is designed for operation in the extreme littorals of northern Europe and in the international arena.

Anti-shipping operations, anti-submarine warfare missions, forward intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance as well as special operations are typical missions for this class of boat. These submarines can carry a powerful array of wire-guided and homing torpedoes, missiles and mines.

The Gotland Class submarines were the world's first conventional submarines designed specifically to incorporate an air-independent propulsion (AIP) system. The Stirling AIP system, together with low underwater signatures and target strength, provide an extraordinary underwater stealth profile.

A very high degree of automation and remote control enables the Gotland to operate with a relatively small crew. The advanced combat management system handles detection, identification, weapon launch and control at distances well beyond the horizon. The combat management system includes an effective sonar suite with circular, intercept and flank arrays. The Gotland Class also possesses an extremely high shock endurance enhancing survivability.
